windows start up - black screen.  no taskbar.
ok. now, when I turn on my computer, all I get is a blank screen, with the "windows 7 Evaluation copy . Build 7100" on the bottom corner. NO task bar nothing. I have to bring up the task manager "ctrl alt del" and start new task "explorer" to get the computer to actually boot up. anyone else have this issue? and of course microsoft doesn't want people contacting them under any circumstances.... their help site, almost makes me want to run a different OS.

Many possibilities. Try administrative tools > system configuration and disable all startup programs and reboot. One of the terms for using the evaluation versions of windows 7which Microsoft defines is that these versions are for more advanced usersfor the fact that Micosoft doesprovide support for the beta and release candidate versions of windows7.

i'll have a look One of the terms for using the evaluation versions of windows 7which Microsoft defines is that these versions are for more advanced usersfor the fact that Micosoft doesprovide support for the beta and release candidate versions of windows7. gee? really? no ____... but then again... feedback on things that go wrong would be helpful. kinda like a 'beta' version... see what's wrong? have people let them know.. so they can kind of make a product that isn't broken.. i was just asking if anyone else had the issue and any if anyone else found a fix for it.

Yes, you may have misunderstood me. Although Microsoft does not provide product support for these versions I was not in any way critisizingthe question you posted here in this forum which does support these versions.Microsoft product support and these forums are two entirely different things. This is the best place to ask questions such as the one we wish to solve right here. The response you recieved from Microsoft help and support is becouse these versions are not supported. That is why forums such as this are the best place to solve problems related to these versions of windows.Feel free to use my or anyone else's suggestions relating to startup issues.

I apologize for my remark... it's been a bad day ( other reasons ) and sometimes I shoot my mouth off. It is no excuse for being rude though, so I do apologize.

Your apology is accepted although why you did I'm not sure, however I hope I restated my answer in such a way that you would have a better understanding.

I don't like being "the ...hole" on the internet, or anywhere else. you were helping and I was rude. that's basically why. sometimes I'm too reactionary. I don't like it. and I know you have no clue who I am, but that is not the point. by and by, I'm a man. and when I make a mistake, I fess up to it, and apologize.

Actually it was my obligation to apologize for not answering your question more conciselyrather thanclarifyingwhat i meant by Microsoft product support as opposed to participant support from this forum. Also there is a local security setting which forces users to use CAD to access the desktop, possibly this is somehow configured.

Nothing much to contribute to this other than you are not alone. This has started happening to me too ever since the last patch was installed. Normally a reboot will give me the desktop back but nothing else will affect anything. In my case I can't even bring up the task bar. Incidentally I have looked and there are at least 3 other posts from people having the same issue but posted on the other forums so given how few are likely to post when they see some one else has already done so I suspect this is impacting a large number of users.

Would you know off hand the KB # to thepatch thatmay have caused this?

I can't be precise since I have autoinstall for critical updates set. However as its only occured the last few days it would have to be either KB972260 (IE8 Security) or KB970363 (Silverlight) or KB915597 (Defender update). As those are the only ones installed between 29/07/2009 and 31/07/2009.

Would you be willing to take the time to remove these updates one at a time so that we may have a better idea of which one may bepreventingthe desktop from loading? I would myself rather than asking you but I don't seem to have any of these updates installed.

I did a little bit of investigation and it seems although it would not be the first time i have bean wrong that the internet security update KB972260 has not bean made available as of yet to windows 7. Just to make sure I am recieving updates I randomly removed one of them and rechecked for updates and it offered it back, but not the security update for internet explorer KB972260 which also is not distributed for windows 7 as a self install package?
August 1st, 2009 12:20pm

WhileI was looking at the critical updates I had installed I noticed that there were 3 optional updates waiting to be installed. One of which was for my graphics card, Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX, so I installed those. Since installing those I have rebooted 5 times and had no issues. I'm hoping that's fixed the issue I was having. However past experience has shown its never a good idea to assume all is well too quickly so I'll post back here if it happens again over the next few days.If this isn't a fix then I'm be happy to back out the last set of updates but as its the weekend and I have a few things I'd like to get done I won't be doing it if all is well.

Sorry, I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean here. Are you suggesting that I installed KB972260 manually rather than it being installed automatically via critical updates? If so then no I didn't. That patch was installed automatically on my PC on 29/07/2009 at 10:19. The patch title is "Cummulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Release Candidate for x64-based Systems (KB972260)".

I'm sure you have more important things to do however I would really like to know for the sake of the OPand since I havecommitted myself by respondingto his issue and since you are still posting at this thread in lew of your scheduale would it be to much of an imposition to take approximately 40 seconds to remove this update so we would know fo sure if it had faulty code?
August 1st, 2009 12:52pm

Well if it's of any use I just recieved this through automatic updates and there were no adverse effects.

Hi, I fixed this issue, I too had the same problem. Here is how I did it. 1) Reboot and press F8 2) Select "Repair my computer" 3) Select the keyboard layout and lanugage 4) When you reach system recovery tools, select System restore. 5) Select the restore point when it was working fine and restart the computer. That's it.... If you do not have the system restore points, try startup repair.
